An Elevator Story-Going Up or Down?

Going Up or Down?
Going Up or Down?

For the next 2 weeks, I’m going to be finishing up a corporate world contracting assignment. I’m a short-timer and as such, I’m relegated to the basement offices of the building I’m working in. There is only 1 elevator that leads down and up, and 3 others that only head up. For a few weeks now, many have stepped into the elevator I’m heading into, thinking it is going up.

Now here’s my point…many people wouldn’t say anything at this point. Instead of telling the person that they are going into an elevator that is not heading in their direction –they say nothing and the person is inconvenienced, maybe even embarrassed and certainly a bit frustrated.

What would you do in a similar situation?

Here’s what I do—-I speak up and tell them they are heading in the wrong direction. If possible, I press both the up and down button on the elevator bank when people are waiting for an elevator –so they don’t make that mistake–because it is the kind and polite thing to do!!

What do I receive as a result?

For one the knowing I haven’t caused someone frustration. And everyone is kind back and says thank you. They appreciate the little gesture that someone cares enough to watch out for them—even for an elevator ride.

How are you treating your fellow human beings?

This is the season to show the kind heart we all possess. You can show kindness and caring every day simply with a smile, or a kind gesture of holding an elevator or a door open. It doesn’t take much – but it does sometimes take just a bit of extra effort. You will be rewarded—of this I am sure. And you will help make the world a better place. Step by step—smile by smile. Try it today and see what happens!

  1. Since I was a child, I would always ask the senior citizens if they needed help in the grocery store as many of them couldn’t reach what they needed- either on the top or bottom shelf! This is just what I did and still do… sometimes it takes me a long time to do my shopping 🙂 What is most awesome is my sons, who witnessed this as grew up, are now adults and do the same. This brings a smile to this mommy’s heart. Kindness and many other virtues are contagious. Most often I have doors held open for me… why?… it’s another one of those things. I accept with a smile and express my appreciation while looking into the other kind person’s eyes 🙂 Let’s all get out there are see what we can make happen!!!!

    1. How wonderful it is to pass along kindness–not only at this time of season–but all year round. Kudos to you and your sons!
