Is the Past Really that Great?

How great is the past, really?  Are you living in the past too much?

A few years ago during one of our channeling sessions, the Divine Guidance Team referenced the book, “50 Shades of Grey” which has just been made into a movie. I saw that movie this last weekend. It’s not for children under 21 years of age, frankly. It has made quite a bit of money and in one review I read that it has brought kinky sex into the mainstream.

This movie may or may not be your cup of tea, and it won’t win any awards, but it does prove that the American audience and the movie review board that rates our movies has come a long way from the days where on TV we had to show a married couple in separate beds. Yes, Dick Van Dyke and the ‘I Love Lucy’ shows had their married spouses in separate beds in the 1960’s.   You couldn’t even show a bathroom in those days!

Often we reminisce about the ‘good ole days’ and miss what we think was a ‘quieter time and place’. But if we really look at history, you will see that the good old days might have been good for the middle-aged, middle-income to wealthy white male, but not so much for the rest of us. And that quiet time and place – did you totally miss any of your history classes???

If we live in the past, we miss out on the present. And it is the present that will determine our future. “Your future begins with your next thought,” Bryant McGill said that and it’s true. What we see, hear and do is all part of what will contribute to our tomorrows.

“Your future begins with your next thought,” –Bryant McGill

So choose what you bring into your present with care—whether it’s the news, a movie, book or TV show; whether it’s a conversation with friends, family or your boss; whether it’s whatever you have going on in your present and how you react to that which is going on.

Be mindful of your actions, your thoughts and your deeds.

In the reference from the Divine Guidance Team, the phrase they used had nothing to do with the book, but the familiar phrase ’50 shades of gray’ once meant. Now it means something else – at least for the time being.

The kids use the phrase ‘sick’ these days to express what my generation used to call ‘cool’.   Frankly something that is cool in my mind, sends out a better signal than naming something ‘sick’, which puts a negative connotation on the word. So I’ll stick with cool — okay, sometimes the past is better than the present –but we still must be aware, discerning and use care with your words, thoughts and deeds. You never know where they will lead you otherwise. Or actually they will – if you pay attention.

What words and phrases do you use regularly that could get you where you don’t want to be?
Are you living in the past or are you aware that your present affects your future?
How are you showing up on a daily basis?

Share with us; we’d love to hear from you and get your thoughts around this subject.
