Our Blue Mind Loves the Water

Why do we love the ocean?
Why do we hang out at the beach?
Why does living near a lake or ocean seem to do us so much good?

It may have to do with your blue mind!

The phrase “blue mind” is one developed by marine biologist Wallace J Nichols in describing the way we feel when we are around large bodies of water.  For years we know that we feel better when we hang out at the ocean or by the lake, taking in nature and all of its beauty.  We long to live near the ocean or great lakes.  We swim and play in the water.  Is it because the human body consists mainly of water or is there something larger going on here?

‘Blue mind’ is a mildly meditative state, according to Nichols, when humans live and play near or on the water.  Our body undergoes physiological changes when we are near water.  These changes can occur even when we observe pictures of water.

In the  19th century doctors would often recommend for their overly stressed patients to go to a retreat near the water, however the scientific evidence was lacking for the actual reasons why this seemed to have such a positive effect on the human body.

Blue MindNichols has researched this water phenomena and human behavior over the last several years and has written a book with the results, entitled: “Blue Mind: The Surprising Science That Shows How Being Near, In, On, or Under Water Can Make You Happier, Healthier, More Connected, and Better at What You Do”.  In his book, Nichols outlines how the brain is actually activated in a different manner when one is surrounded or is observation of water.  We knew we felt better around the water and now there is scientific evidence of why.  However it is noted in the book, the water must not be polluted water, for that has the opposite effect, causing us sickness not health.

Nichols provides us with cutting-edge neurological science along with celebrity and athletic interviews to paint a picture that reveals what most of us have known for years – hanging out at the beach makes us happier and healthier.

Just another excuse to hit the beaches this summer!

Blue Mind by Wallace J. Nichols is available at most bookstores, including our Amazon web store, and is published by Little, Brown and Company.
