Autumn is here!

Some local fall colors!

Do you know what time it is?
Are the leaves changing colors where you are?
Do you feel the crispness in the air?

It’s now late October and autumn is in full swing.

As many of you who have been following this blog know, there were awesome colorful autumns when I was growing up in Rochester, NY.  The trees were huge and the colors were, to say the least, spectacular.  Hopefully you are experiencing a similar scenario this year!  I know I am!  Now that I’m in Wisconsin, the colors here are a great tapestry of yellow, reds, orange and browns.

Autumn leavesThe change of the seasons is often celebrated.  This is the time of the harvest—times to celebrate all you have accomplished during this last year.   We bet you’ve accomplished more than you think.  Lots of people’s lives have been hectic this year; remember now is the time for great changes in our  world, this is the time of the Great Shift and did we expect anything less than change in our lives?

This year the autumn colors have been great  We have a nearby park which this year didn’t disappoint. I was able to take a day trip up north with a friend and we marveled at all the wonderful fall colors.  I go looking a the leaves every years.  Just my way of celebrating my harvest—with a mini-vacation!  I’ll post pictures of what I found in on our Facebook page.   How will you celebrate your time of the harvest?

Enjoy this season! You can dress in that favorite wool sweater again now that the weather is getting cooler.   The smells of pumpkin or apple pies fill kitchens with yummy smells and burning leaves fill the outdoor air.  Halloween is now upon us too!

I once heard that you usually like the season that you were born in the best.  I don’t know about that—although I was born in the fall (November) and I always get excited about this time of year.  It’s probably the anticipation of the holiday season, which I do enjoy.  Light and love fill that season and who doesn’t want more of that? It’s a great season for light workers!  (And we’re not just talking about those folks who professional decorate for the holidays!)

May this season and month of October be one that lights the fire in your heart and soul.  To help keep you warm and cozy as the nights grow colder, and just because, I put a nice apple oatmeal cookie recipe below.  It’s from one of our local apple groves aptly named Apple Holler.  Check them out on the web! (www.AppleHoller.com)  It is a fun place to go to anytime of the year.  They have apples, pears and pumpkins to pick and buy, farm animals to pet, a corn maze and hay ride, and a great little country store and restaurant, full of great meals.  Oh, there’s more too; like I said.  Check them out if you’re in the area.  (And no, I’m not getting any kickbacks to promote them—I just like the place and think you might like it too.)

Apple Oatmeal Cookies from Apple Holler


3/4 cup shortening
1 1/4 cups firmly packed brown sugar
1 large eggs
1/4 cup milk

1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
1 cup flour
1 1/4 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
3 cups quick oats (not instant or old fashioned)
1 cup peeled diced apples
3/4 cup raisins (optional)
3/4 cup coarsely chopped walnuts (optional)


  1. Preheat oven to 375° and grease cookie sheet.
  2. Combine shortening, sugar, egg, milk and vanilla in large bowl.
  3. Beat at medium speed until well blended.
  4. Combine flour, cinnamon, salt, soda and nutmeg in a small bowl and mix into creamed mixture at low speed until just blended.
  5. Stir in oats, apples, raisins and nuts.
  6. Drop rounded tablespoonfuls of dough about 2-inches apart onto prepared cookie sheets.
  7. Bake for 13 minutes or until just set.
  8. Cool for a minute or 2 on cookie sheets and then remove to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. Bake 30 to 35 minutes or until apples are tender. Serve warm.
