The Power of Intention

Maya is one of my 'dancing cats'.
Every morning, as I just wake up and lie in bed, my cats dancing around me eager for their mother to get up and feed them, I perform what I call my Gratitudes and My Intentions ritual. It is the time where I say thanks for waking up and all the things I am grateful for –including dancing cats and alarm clocks and where I also state what I am planning to do that day. It is a brief outline, in my head, about the day’s events and what I intent to accomplish that day. For example, I intended to write this blog today, which will be posted a few days from the time I’m writing this. I also intended to keep my mood happy and my attitude bright.

They are small steps to keep me focused and on the path I’m choosing to go on. It takes only a few minutes before I roll out of bed, my feet hitting the ground and I’m off on a new day.

As I go to sleep at night, I also say what I am grateful for –for example, that I accomplished my intention! But if I didn’t fulfill my intention – I am still grateful for the opportunity to do so the next day.
I found an on-line article on the power of intention, by Sharon Salzberg who is the author of “Faith: Trusting Your Own Deepest Experiences.” She relates her own point of view about intentions and has some good information to share.

Habits are simply actions you keep giving power to – some habits are good habits – like stating your intention daily and another good habit is being grateful for all that you have in life. Remember to be grateful daily and set your intentions. You’ll be amazed just how far you can go!

Blake is grateful for all her dancing cats and sets her intention daily. She doesn’t always accomplish her intention, but just formulating it keeps her mind sharp and her attention alerted to the possibilities that life offers her daily.

  1. Great post Blake! I totally agree with the power of intention… it is, ah, p-o-w-e-r-f-u-l indeed! I have always found that setting my intentions each day for each project or event is the key to having a successful way of experiencing life. This is one practice of mine that is rock solid!
