What is Your Light Bulb Moment?

Numbers4 + 5 = 9

6 + 3 = 9

There is often more than one way to arrive at an answer.

I saw the above the other day and had a light bulb moment.  Actually several light bulb, aha moments.

My first was that I prefer getting to 9 by adding 4 + 5, versus 3 + 6, which somehow always confuses me. I have no idea why.  Math is not my forte.  However, 4 +5 just feel more ‘right’ to me, than 3 + 6.  Both add up to nine.  So why one equation versus the other feels more ‘right’ is a strange way of feeling about a simple equation.  Perhaps it is the numbers of 4 and 5, versus 3 and 6.  But I digress.  The point is there is more than one way to arrive at an answer for any of us.  It depends on our perception and perspective.

My second light bulb moment came after I read reviews of the ‘Mad Men” series finale.  For those of you who didn’t get caught up in this retro series of Madison advertising men and women and their almost 10 year life journey from 1963 – 1970’s, let me tell you it’s some of television writing and directing at its best.  It also reflected my childhood, as my father and my mother were part of this time period with its changing values in both the workplace and in the lives of Americans.  Let’s just say I could relate to the era, since I grew up during this time period.

So when I read reviews, most likely from folks in their 20’s and 30’s, I knew instinctively that they could not really relate to that era.  They didn’t grow up with struggles and changing values.  On a more conscious level, I read the reviews and wondered “What the *f*?!  What series were they watching?” as their comments were based on today’s values, and thus horribly off base for most of the comments.

They didn’t ‘get’ the characters final stages of life and how they got there, because they saw the characters from today’s perspective – not those found in the early 1970’s.  Their view points were out of context for the time and thus the reviews were skewed to today’s world, not the world of 1970, which was much different than today.  Again, I know—I lived it.

However, I also know that there’s more than one way to get to an answer.  Which is my point.  When you look at your world and the world at large, you may have to find that there is more than one way to get to your answer or view the world and other people views of the world.

How are you viewing your world?  What tinted shades are you viewing the world from?  Are you aware that your view is unique and most often not that of your neighbor, your friend, your spouse or your family?

Each person comes with their own unique blend of judgment and clarity of vision, skewed, blurry or not.

Remember this the next time you sit in a meeting or a group – and find yourself in disagreement with others.  Remember there are several ways to get the answer.

1 + 8 = 9

See?  Yet another way of getting to the same answer!

Blake will miss ‘Mad Men’ and found the series finale perfectly acceptable.  She does not however miss the 1960’s or 1970’s.
